Distance: 4.94 km
Time: 60-90 minutes one way, depending on pace and stops
Elevation: 1211 – 1259 meters (68 m gain)
Route: Follow the Gats River downstream, past stunning cliffs and crisscrossing the river four times. Hidden up a small kloof to the left after the second gate is the swimming hole, carved out by water over the millennia. Please close any gates.
Points of interest: Rock formations and cliffs along the river. You will pass the blacksmith’s pomegranate hedge, a former wagon stop along the route to Graff-Reinet. Look for Acacia Pied Barbet, kudu, and rock hyrax (dassies).
Beware of low hanging thorns and holes made by aardvarks and porcupines. The descent to the swimming hole has loose rock and it’s very slippery.
Hats, suntan lotion, water, and sturdy shoes are a must on all walks! Insect spray such as peaceful sleep may help with biting horseflies.
Tip: Go after a rain when there is fresh water and potential waterfall.
No cell phone reception.
